Sexual Health Q&A

Why is sexual health important?

Sexual health is important because it influences your overall health. Your sexual health includes the physical, social, emotional, and mental factors surrounding your sexuality.

Good sexual health isn’t only about not having a sexually transmitted disease (STD); it’s about having a positive attitude about your sexuality and having respectful sexual relationships that are safe and pleasurable.

Understanding and caring for your sexual health is important for your physical, emotional, and social well-being.

When should I get medical care for sexual health?

Anyone who is sexually active or has been in the past should get medical care for sexual health. Some common reasons to seek sexual health care are:

STDs

STDs are infections that spread from person to person through sexual contact. STDs are common and can occur without causing symptoms. When left undiagnosed and untreated, STDs may lead to serious health complications like reproductive cancer or infertility.

Sexual dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is a general term that refers to problems that affect sexual satisfaction when engaging in sexual activity. You may have little desire for sexual contact, struggle with arousal, or have delayed or absent orgasms.

Sexual dysfunction affects people of all ages but is more common as you get older due to changes in sex hormone levels.

Dysphoria

Dysphoria is a state of unease or dissatisfaction. There are many types of dysphoria, including sexual and body dysphoria. If you’re anxious or distressed about your sexual health or body presentation, contact Alliance Primary Care.

What can I expect during a sexual health evaluation?

You can expect a patient-centered evaluation from Danielle at Alliance Primary Care when you come in with concerns about sexual health. Danielle asks about your symptoms and concerns and your sexual history. She reviews your medical history and does a physical exam.

Danielle may also order lab work to confirm or rule out a diagnosis. Alliance Primary Care does onsite lab tests and at-home testing.

What are sexual health treatments?

Danielle talks to you about your sexual health and treatments that can best address your needs. Treatment for sexual health issues depends on the underlying cause and may include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Medications to improve arousal
  • Medications to treat STDs
  • Psychotherapy

Your sexual health is an important part of your overall wellness and is nothing to be ashamed of.
